Forklift Trucks: Driver Assistance in Narrow Aisles Thanks to RFID

Task
The number of accidents resulting in damage to property and bodily injury is higher than average at junctions and in tight passages in distribution centers and warehouses. Users are interested in finding ways of avoiding such accidents. A simple method is to limit the maximum speed of the vehicle in certain areas, or to restrict the lifting height.
Concise Description
RFID transponders in the warehouse floor can assist forklift truck drivers in critical situations. Attaching an RFH6xx high frequency read/write device underneath a forklift truck enables it to read the transponders and pass the position information on to the vehicle control system.
Implementation
Disc transponders that can easily be lowered into the warehouse floor can be used. The typical axle height for narrow aisle vehicles is 35 mm. The RFH6xx is attached underneath the forklift around 50 mm from the ground (= reading distance to the transponder).
The RFH6xx reliably reads 12 bytes (3 blocks) from the transponders in the floor at vehicle speeds of 4 m/s. The transponder data read out is passed on to the vehicle control unit via the integrated CANopen interface. The control unit decides on suitable measures on the basis of the position information received from the transponders. At the end of an aisle or at a junction this may mean reducing the speed; when passing through gateways or if there are obstacles under the ceiling it may mean limiting the lifting height.
Customer Benefits
The RFH6xx is ideal thanks to its housing, which is suitable for industrial applications. It includes an integrated antenna, signal and data processing and integrated CANopen interface. This compact unit can be integrated simply even in the smallest of spaces. Parameter cloning (with Micro SD Card) enables rapid replacement in the event of faults. The investment is future-proof thanks to adherence to globally established ISO/IEC15693 standards.

This Economist article Robots in the rustbelt: The future lies in automation  discusses the future of manufacturing in China and the required movement to improve productivity with automation and robots due to rapid wage growth. Peter Guarraia of Bain highlights that “co-bots” - robots designed to collaborate with human workers - are the big global trend in factory automation.

Visit Eastec 2017
May 16-18
Eastern States Exposition
Springfield, MA

Eastec - New England’s premier manufacturing exposition, returns May 16-18, 2017. With more than 500 exhibitors, complimentary conference sessions, industry keynotes and much more, EASTEC is an event dedicated to keeping northeast manufacturers competitive. It’s where manufacturing ideas, processes and products that make an impact in the northeast region, are highlighted through exhibits, education and networking events. The event offers a unique chance to connect with resources that can solve your company’s most pressing problems, improve productivity and increase profits. It’s clear why so many business owners, engineers, designers, production managers and purchasing executives attend EASTEC to keep their operations current. EASTEC brings human ingenuity and manufacturing brilliance together. Make sure it’s part of your strategy and reserve the dates on your calendar!

This year Eastec is asking exhibitors to show their support in the SME Student Innovation Tour. - The Time is Now! Preparing our Workforce of the Future. They have created a special event for students. They asked all the exhibitors if they would like to become a "Student Friendly" exhibitor, which entails hosting a small group of students at your booth for a short informational session regarding your products, processes, and equipment

Gibson Engineering has gladly accepted their request, and is excited to host student groups through out the show May 16-18!

An organization is often said to be only as good as its people, but most business leaders don’t know the real impact of their workforce investments on business results. Key questions that frequently go unanswered are:

1.       What is our workforce productivity and return on people investments? How do we rank?

2.       Can we model the workforce to optimize cost, profit and productivity?

3.       Where does our best “A” and “B” role talent come from? Is it better to build, buy or rent talent?

4.       What is our cost of turnover? How does turnover impact business results?

5.       Can we get talent that costs less and/or is more productive and engaged?

To answer these questions, we developed the "6 Cs" framework of Strategic Workforce Planning: Capability, Capacity, Cost, Composition, Culture and Change. I’ll address Capability and Capacity in this post.
Capability

Capability refers to the depth and breadth of skills and abilities the business needs from its workforce to execute its near term business strategy. While all businesses share common sets of needs, each business is unique in the complexity and priority of its needs at a given point in time. For example, a low cost producer of a commodity product will have very different workforce capability needs than a robotics firm with an emerging technology that is launching a first-to-market product.
An important component of the capability assessment is determining which roles are critical business contributors (“A”), significant business contributors (“B”) or non-essential business contributors (“C”). This role allocation will help prioritize workforce investment decisions.

Capacity
Capacity refers to the volume of workforce output needed to meet changing external and internal customer demands.  Over capacity will result in excess costs while under capacity can lead to lost revenue and the reputational risk that comes with missed deadlines or unmet orders. Unplanned turnover in competitive job markets is a frequent cause of capacity concerns in high growth industries.

Project-based work, cyclical demand and rapid ramp ups are excellent candidates for alternative staffing options to improve agility, align costs with expected revenue and provide immediate access to skills. In addition, non-essential “C” level business contributor roles are good targets for outsourcing to 3rd party providers who can provide these skills at lower per unit costs.
Next up:  Cost and Composition

With workforce capability and capacity plans in place, the next areas to tackle are workforce cost and composition. I’ll address these in my next post.

Everyone knows that happy employees are more productive.
Not everyone knows how much.
In some professions the difference can be 10 fold.
This is what managers can do if they are not doing it already:
Accept that employees know more than you do.
In modern day and age it is impossible to know everything. Empowering people who know more than we do is the real answer.
Stop calling and treating employees as "resources".
People are colleagues and team members, not dehumanised resources and commodities.
Make recognition of accomplishments real.
Thanks are due when thanks are due. But the scale of the reward should meet the scale of the accomplishment. Stop recognising and rewarding wrong people.
Money is not everything, however
People should be paid what they deserve.
Stop managing up:
e.g. switching priorities, useless meetings and red tape
Integrity
It is better to lose doing the right thing, than to win doing the wrong thing.
Let them do things properly:
A wood cutter is busy cutting trees, day in and out. A passer-by says why dont you sharpen you saw ? The wood cutter says I do NOT have time to sharpen my saw, my boss keeps me too busy.
Find the right perspective:
He sees a shadow, you see a light that casts it.
He sees the night, you see the moon.
He sees a corporation, you see people who make it thrive.
He sees millennials, you see our bright future.
He sees success, you see a journey.
He sees you, a stranger. You see him, your future friend.
---
To bring it all together:
Happy employees can be found working for managers who are thoughtful and knowledgeable, fearless and kind, grateful and confident, honest and passionate.
  • Best people work for caring leaders.

As this McKinsey Global Institute report A FUTURE THAT WORKS: AUTOMATION, EMPLOYMENT, AND PRODUCTIVITY finds "realizing automation’s full potential requires people and technology to work hand in hand."

Many manufacturing CEOs consider the people impact on their business after they have made decisions regarding investments in automation. To maximize productivity and get the greatest return from automation it is better to determine in advance the workforce needs and goals for the new environment. At Workforce Innovation Partners, we suggest clients take a "6 Cs" approach to the people side of business strategy looking at the workforce Capability, Capacity, Cost, Composition, Culture and Change. Look for more on the "6 Cs" in an upcoming post.
